The Kawar Dates: A Hidden Saharan Treasure of Niger

A Unique Agricultural Heritage

Niger is a country full of potential, often underutilized. Among its many riches, the dates of the Kawar region stand out.In July 2022, a Date Festival held in Dirkou by the NGO GARKUA showcased the diversity and excellence of these fruits.

These dates are not just food; they carry a long history of trans-Saharan trade, once connecting Kawar to the Aïr (west) and Bornou (south).

Centuries of Selection and Knowledge

Kawar farmers are not just growers — they are heirs to a traditional science of date palm cultivation, transmitted orally across generations.

Over centuries, they selected date varieties capable of:

  • resisting pests,

  • surviving the extreme desert climate,

  • and above all, being stored for up to two years without losing taste or nutritional value, even in rudimentary conditions.

This unique expertise makes Kawar dates unlike any other in the world.

Varieties of Excellence

The main varieties by region are:

  • Aguis → Dirkou and Bilma

  • Dilo and Sobour → Fachi

  • Sobour and Yilfodom → Djado

Alongside these dominant types, there are many local varieties for immediate consumption — delicious but less resistant to long storage.

A Declining Trade

Today, caravan trade is gone, and despite their exceptional quality, Kawar dates struggle to reach new markets.Ironically, Niger imports low-quality dates — often rejected from international markets — while its premium local produce remains ignored.
